I've been reviewing a number of print sources to get more up-to-date on the current scene and have also found this list to be quite helpful. In a recent article (to me, actually, 1990) "Software Tools for Indexing" in The Indexer, Nancy Mulvany cited the Z39.4-1984 standard so I tried to get a hold of it -- only to find it was out of print. The folks at ANSI failed to mention the new draft. It has been most gratifying to find it here, electronically. Thanks for making it available! Kate McCain has noted that much of the discussion on this list has dealt with book indexing. I have found much of the discussion to be lively, focused and informative ... and a good base to work from. But what I am really curious about is what role indexers should, perhaps already do have in creating indexes for networked materials. Is anyone on this list working with software applications for indexing on the networks (I mean, besides the larger commercial services that we are seeing more & more of on the Internet)? The tentative explorations I've made of such services as WAIS, or Gopher seem largely limited to keyword approaches. Does anyone know of some good grass-roots types of indexes *on the networks* that offer more than keywords that one might look at in relation to the ANSI/NISO guidelines?? Any insights would be appreciated. Obviously, I can't duplicate the typefaces and graphics, but here is the text. ********************************************************* INDEX SALE INDEX SALE CATCHWORD is doing the unheard of. For indexes completed in January or February, 1993, CATCHWORD is offering indexing services at a full 33-percent discount. Our normal price of 75 cents per entry will be reduced to 50 cents per entry for indexes completed in January or February. Take a look at your schedules and give us a call. These prices are good on a first-come first-served basis only. A minimum charge of $200.00 applies. Estimates are based on two entries per text page. CATCHWORD is a full-service packager. I find this ad very bothersome. To discount professional services in this way makes our work look quite trivial. "Estimates are based on two entries per text page." Jeez.... I've never indexed anything that averaged 2 entries/page. As a "full-service packager" I wonder if their other services are as tacky and apparently amateurish as their indexing services. -nancy nmulvany@well.sf.ca.us ========================================================================= Date: Wed, 16 Sep 1992 09:25:24 ECT Reply-To: Indexer's Discussion Group Sender: Indexer's Discussion Group From: "Barbara E. I agree that it shows a questionable level of professionalism. Here are half of us trying to put our rates up to a living wage and along comes someone offering cut-rate services. We need a strong show of solidarity to nip this in the bud. By the way, is CATCHWORD Inc. or its principals a member of ASI? They need their consciousnesses raised, and quickly! Barbara E. Years ago, when I was a crafty person, I read a book called "Selling Your Crafts." The chapter on figuring out how much to charge discussed how to analyse your "real" costs and also gave examples of how _ecperienced_ craftspeople found shortcuts to establishing prices. For instance, a goldsmith found that so-many-cents-per-ounce OF THE FINISHED PIECE was, on average, a good approximation to the "real costs." Could this company be thinking that way -- having found that, on the average, cents-per- entry was a _approximation_ of the finished price?
