When I envisioned this listserv a little over a year ago, I felt confident that if a forum were provided, the discussion would flow. You are all to be congratulated for the success of this effort. The quality of the discussion has been excellent as well as informative, wide- ranging, respectful, and best of all, it has taken little effort on my part. As of today, we have 359 subscribers--from 22 countries: Australia 9 Netherlands 3 Austria 1 New Zealand 1 Canada 24 Norway 1 Finland 2 Saudi-Arabia 2 France 1 Singapore 1 Germany 3 South Africa 1 Great Britain 5 Sweden 2 Israel 1 Switzerland 1 Italy 2 Taiwan 2 Japan 2 USA 288 Mexico 1 ??? 6 In honor of this anniversary, I have created a frequently-asked- question (FAQ) file. I will post it today--following this message--and then every other month in order to keep new subscribers informed. Please let me know if I have left anything out that you feel should be included. Finally, I am curious about our subscribers--who you are and what you do--so I am working on a survey which I will distribute before the end of the summer. In the meantime, keep those e-cards and e-letters coming! Over the last few years my colleague David Reason and I have been researching some of the issues and problems which arise with indexing in hypertext (hypermedia) environments. While our work is as yet of a preliminary nature, we have carried out one or two studies of index use. This has helped articulate some of the conceptual issues of index design within electronic environments, notwithstanding the recognition that some of these problems have been commented on with more traditional media. Anyway by way of introduction I enclose a short abstract of a recently submitted paper to 'OnlineInformation93'. If anyone would like a copy of the paper then do not hesitate to let me know (electronic or paper of course). Most of all, any comments would be very welcome Abstract below ____________________________________ Title Hypermedia and Indexing: identifying appropriate models from user studies Abstract There is a growing interest in the application of hypertext (hypermedia) to the task of indexing and this interest reflects the increasing availability of on-line electronic material (text and text/graphics/video; CD), and a recognition that considerable benefits might arise from the application of hypermedia techniques (both in academic and commercial contexts). This paper consider the relationship between indexing and hypermedia on two fronts (a) Conceptualising adequate models of index structures and indexing procedures, and (b) establishing what readers do when accessing indexes. With regard to (a), there are a range of explicit and implicit models (or abstractions) underlying databases, documents and indexes. A fundamental starting point for the development of a sub-structure indexing tools for use with hypermedia is the precise specification of such models. A analysis of sub-structure indexing models will allow the identification of those constraints which are largely technical (fundamentally linked to the system-derived parameters of particular computing systems), and those which are conceptual (i.e. intrinsic to the 'semantics' of indexes and indexing procedures). Related also, of course, are aspects of the problem which derive from how indexes (the electronic form that is) can, and should be, presented. The first part of this paper considers a framework for the identification of such models. The second aspect of the research reported here concerns index use. A field study was conducted looking at the use accountants (N = 10) make of indexing facilities in a large financial services document. Task analysis highlighted the range of problems encountered, strategies employed and the kinds of solutions arrived at. The results indicate that there are six key factors underlying the 'rule of thumb' procedure which users employ when interrogating an index. The implications for this study for the design of indexing tools within hypermedia environment are discussed. Author: Dr. M. Fountain" Subject: Indexing for a catalog ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- I am working with a relatively new firm which originally indicated they wanted a "library catalog," but which in fact wants a catalog that acts/looks like the databases they are now using in libraries, such as those available from SilverPlatter. We are using DataTrek cataloging software for the catalog itself, and it has a fairly hospitable searching program called Universal Search Module 2, which allows freetext searching on any string in the record. Short of writing individual records for each article, though, it cannot display the kind of specific results they are accustomed to seeing. Do any of the indexing software (In-Sort, Macrex, or Cindex, etc.) produce that kind of display? Even if we have two pieces of software, it is very important to the staff here (not library staff) to be able to find information as they do in the academic libraries, so I would appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks! joanna@tenet.edu =========================================================================
