Please excuse any duplication. *************************************************************** International Society for Knowledge Organization Fourth International Conference: July 15-18, 1996, Washington, DC CALL FOR PAPERS Knowledge organization in the coming century will differ markedly from that of this past century. Continued information and document growth, expansion and change in user needs and information-seeking behaviors, and changes in technological, political, economic, educational, and social environments mandate increased development and improvement in knowledge organization tools, techniques, schemes, and systems. In light of the challenges and promises of this situation, the International Society for Knowledge Organization (ISKO) will hold its 4th International Conference (ISKO 4), sponsored by the Library of Congress, and in cooperation with OCLC Forest Press, the Classification Research Special Interest Group of the American Society for Information Science (ASIS SIG/CR) and the College of Library and Information Services (CLIS) of the University of Maryland, at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC, USA, July 15-18, 1996 to address the theme: Knowledge Organization and Change Papers and panels addressing Knowledge Organization and Change from any of the following interlocking perspectives are invited: From an Environmental Perspective: the impact of ongoing changes in technological, political, economic, educational, and social environments on how knowledge is produced, organized, and used From an Information/Knowledge Perspective: the challenges created by changing views of knowledge (e.g., theories of knowledge, stores of knowledge) across time, cultures, languages, disciplines, users, and uses From a Document Perspective: new methods of creating and presenting documents (e.g., collaborative documents, hypertext, multimedia); changes in text composition, genres, and discourse; dynamic documents; managing document versions, variants, and views From a User Perspective: expansion of and change in user needs and user information-seeking behaviors; the effect of user interface design on users' abilities to access and assimilate information; the effect of discourse and interpretive communities, disciplinary/interdisciplinary communication, and network communications on users' conceptions of knowledge From a Knowledge Organization Systems Perspective: new developments in knowledge organization tools, techniques, schemes, and systems; natural language processing and expert systems; response of knowledge organization theory and practice to change in other arenas; management of change in knowledge organization schemes and systems The conference will also celebrate the 120th anniversary of the Dewey Decimal Classification, and papers addressing the conference theme with respect to DDC are especially welcome. Prospective speakers or panels are asked to submit extended abstracts of 500-1000 words by September 30, 1995 to Rebecca Green, Program Chair (see contact information below; electronic submissions welcome--please mention ISKO in subject line). An international program committee will review the papers, and authors will be notified of acceptance decisions by January 31, 1996. The deadline for submission of papers for the printed conference proceedings will be March 31, 1996. "Computer Support to Indexing" - Thursday, Sept. 21, 1995 - 9:00 a.m. - 4:45 p.m. - Washington, DC - American Psychological Association/PsycINFO There is renewed interest in the support computers can provide to the production of abstracts, indexes, and other electronic products. Automated support takes many forms-- authority file support, display and selection from an online thesaurus, and text analysis and assignment of terms, with or without human review. The state of the art will be discussed through a general overview and case studies of pilot and operational systems. The expert presenters leading this seminar are: Jessica Milstead, The JELEM Company, who gives an "Overview"; Joel Hammond, BIOSIS, discusses "Automated Support to Indexing at BIOSIS - Authority File & "Pick List" Support"; Helen Atkins, ISI, talks about "ISI's Keywordplus - Automated Indexing Without Human Review"; June Silvester, NASA, discusses "NASA's Machine Aided Indexing - Supplying Candidate Terms in a Client Server Environment"; and Captain James Kent, National Air Intelligence Center, talks about their machine assisted indexing. "TQM-Benchmarking in Indexing" - Thursday, Oct. 19, 1995 -10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. * Washington, DC - American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) This new NFAIS course is aimed at indexing supervisors, indexers, and upper management and will focus on the quality aspects within the indexing environments. The morning session will concentrate on the NFAIS Benchmarking Project as well as an overview of benchmarking basics. The afternoon session will consist of actual case studies and an interactive workshop. Sunday, Oct. 29, 1995 Expert speakers who will be presenting are: A representative from IBM or Xerox will give the Introduction and present an overview of benchmarking, Pam Weaver from Petroleum Abstracts will discuss the "NFAIS Benchmarking Project", Nancy D. Wright of the National Library of Medicine, David Weisgerber from Chemical Abstracts Service, a representative from Engineering Index, and a representative from Information Access Company, will all discuss Indexing Quality" at their respective organizations. "Information Industry Overview" - a "Pre-Online '95 Conference " session - Sunday, Oct. 29, 1995 - 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. * Chicago, IL - Palmer House Hilton With the information industry growing at an astounding rate, it can be difficult to keep up with it. So NFAIS is holding its one-day seminar to help the newly hired, as well as the seasoned professionals, learn and talk about the history, present conditions, and future outlook of the industry. This seminar is a must for all in the online information industry. The expert presenters that will be leading this seminar are: Richard Kaser of NFAIS, gives us an "Historical Overview"; Ann Caputo from Knight-Ridder, talks about "The products"; Jennifer Klein of Astra Merck, discusses "Producers & Vendors"; Steve Boyle of Nalco Chemical Company, talks about the "Users"; and Nancy Knight from Silverplatter Information, sheds some light on "The Future." "Basics of Abstracting" - Friday, Nov. 10, 1995 - 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. - Philadelphia, PA - KNIGHT-RIDDER Information, Inc This is an interactive session that will provide attendees with the background and practical insight needed to write clear, concise, quality abstracts. Presentations include discussions of current standards for writing abstracts, a description of abstracting in different disciplines, an overview of structured abstracts and a look at how technology may influence the future of abstracting. Workshops will encourage participation from the attendees in critiquing abstracts and editing author abstracts, with the assistance of the expert panelists. Professional abstractors, abstracting and indexing service abstractors, and free-lance abstractors are strongly encourage to attend. The expert panelists include: Boris Jakim from the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, Michael Rinehart of the Clark Art Institute, Eileen Dolan from BIOSIS, Gail Hodge from RMS Associates, NASA Center for AeroSpace Information, and other key industry players. ****************************************************************************** ******************** To recieve registration information and seminar costs, please contact NFAIS Headquarters at 215-893-1561, fax: 215-893-1564 or e-mail: trip10@aol.com. This is a very primitive feature, even for a word-processor. Each software manual belongs to a "library" of manuals (that is, a collection of manuals relating to a particular product). Each "library" consists of up to 20 manuals, which are released several times a year, so the indexes need to be maintained continuously. What I need to do is to create individual indexes to each manual; and in addition a "master" index for each "library", containing all the entries (interfiled) of all the constituent manuals, giving a volume or manual number or code and the page number(s). Is it possible to do this using Microsoft Word? If not, is there an add-on which allows MSWord-produced indexes to be tagged by volume and interfiled? I would probably be responsible for coordinating the efforts of several volunteer indexers (after "educating" them first, of course), and I've been thinking about ways I'd go about it. I think I'd have everyone use the old-fashioned index-cards-in-a-shoe-box method; then I'd review the index cards, make any necessary corrections, and have a typist key in the entries. The editor of the paper is especially interested in retrieving information on people; for example, if someone comes in and asks to see the obituary for their Aunt Nellie who died six years ago, the editor wants the newspaper staff to be able to retrieve it easily. Now, what I'm wondering is this: What kind of databases (or indexing software) do most newspapers use for this sort of thing? And do they share their databases with other newspapers around the country? Thanks in advance to folks on INDEX-L who can provide some info or ideas for this project.
