Hi Pat Here at Rotorua Public Library we use the newspaper *indexing* module which comes with our DYNIX library system. We call it indexing but it is actually abstracting with subject headings assigned. We compose fairly thorough abstracts (at least one or two sentences per story) and cover virtually every local item, no matter how trivial. Everyday sports and crime are ignored. It is OK in many respects but I am pushing to get some changes made to it. You don't say what it is you don't like, so it is difficult to say whether you need a complete change (like to DYNIX - expensive), a change of software (say to MS Access) or perhaps you need to re-examine the way you do your index. I'm sure that it will produce a file that you can easily search for the terms of interest. BUT the searcher has to be dBase literate. It is a reasonable way for a company to keep its own records for its own use. If you are producing more than a list of terms and page numbers you would benefit from using one of the indexing programs that allows you to print headings and subheadings. I think that when you are producing printed work (and maybe even online work) the searcher benefits from viewing the term and choices of related headings at the same time. My thought is that if your patrons are going to search it directly they would probably need to be familiar with its search functions. Have you had a look as ASI's web page? An e-mail correspondent sent me a message that he had had trouble accessing the Walker style sheet site with the URL I gave for it. He found that the "222" part got him an infinite wait, while substituting "www" worked just fine. I tried getting to the site with both variants of address using Websurfer and Netscape. Websurfer was unable to resolve the address containing "222" but had no problem with "www". Netscape accessed the address with "www" almost instantly, but took a very, very long time using "222". Clearly, "www" is the better variation. I tried all the Web addresses before posting that message, and recall no trouble, no long wait using "222" at that time. However, that was at about 5:30 am. This last try was at around 1:30 pm, which is no doubt a busier time. Still, using "www" worked very quickly. The posting I got which initially referred me to the Walker site does say "222". I really cannot explain all this, I'm not an information highway mechanic nor an Internet untangler. I do regret having passed on information that turned out to be defective, despite testing, and hope no one has been seriously inconvenienced or frustrated by it. She suggested he try using the Library of Congress authority records she had relied on as a cataloger.
