Carolyn Weaver Vice-Chair, PNW/ASI ---------- Forwarded message ---------- MEETING ANNOUNCEMENT PACIFIC NORTHWEST CHAPTER AMERICAN SOCIETY OF INDEXERS Saturday, August 10, 1996 11:30 am - 3:00 pm Speaker: Anne Leach Palm Desert, California Topic: Decisions, Decisions! Making Choices for a Quality Index Anne Leach has been prospering as a fulltime freelance indexer for 10 years. In that time, having indexed numerous monographs and textbooks, as well as innumerable software manuals, she has developed theories of usability and quality applicable to the three very different types of audiences for the indexes to scholarly works, textbooks, and technical manuals. In this session, she will share these theories with us, along with proofs, examples, and practice texts. Anne has been a member of ASI as long as she has been indexing, and attributes much of her success to her early involvement in the Golden Gate Chapter of ASI and the support of her good friends there. She has been a director of ASI for two back-to-back terms, head of the Publicity Committee for three years, editor of Key Words for over six years, and president of the Southern California Chapter. Because she gets paid for reading books for a living, her hobby is, naturally, reading--murder mysteries for excitement and Jane Austen for amusement. The library is less that 2000 books, the school has less than 20 students, and I'm primarily interested in tracking new acquisitions. I'd like something simple enough for grade 6 or junior high students to run. Any pointers to such an app will be much appreciated. My searches to date have been fruitless. In-Reply-To: In reply to your message of Tue, 30 Jul 1996 12:44:56 CDT I think I'd index the author's name; it can always be edited out if the author or publisher isn't pleased. Along that line, a few years back we produced an important early modern history monograph; alas, the author was so "self-assured," shall we say, that he wanted cross references in footnotes (in each chapter!) to all his self-citations in each chapter. I refused to do that; instead, I put the author's name in the index and all 27 (!) locations of his self-citations. I did it to show the author that he was over-referencing himself. However, he was so pleased at having all his self-citations gathered in one place that he didn't object to not having the x-refs! _____________________________________________________ Paula Presley FAX 816-785-4181 VOICE 816-785-4525 Associate Editor, THOMAS JEFFERSON UNIVERSITY PRESS Copy/Production Editor, SIXTEENTH CENTURY JOURNAL MC 111-L, TRUMAN STATE UNIVERSITY 100 E. I index many trade non-fiction books (indeed, I'm working on one today, and the author even has a short section about himself, but he really has had a large part in the subject) in which the author plays a role. Although sometimes the author may just be popping in her or his own name just to see it in print, it hasn't usually happened thus in the books I index (though in general-interest trade books, the editor may have played a part in keeping out unnecessary references). Sorry, lots of blather, but I haven't time to make it shorter! Yes, index the author. Our standard is *not* to put the author in the index because 1) the reader knows who "I" is and 2) they wouldn't likely have any reason to look up the author in the index. Just my two cents.
