Would you like to have a mentor at the conference, someone to talk to or to help you acclimate? Are you a seasoned conference attendee who would like to share your experience with a student or a new professional? If you answered YES to any of these questions, the CONFERENCE MENTOR PROGRAM is for you! The Mentoring Committee of NMRT is sponsoring this project to help make new attendees feel at ease at a conference whose size can often be overwhelming and intimidating. Who is a mentor? A mentor is an experienced and trusted advisor. Within the context of ALA conferences , it is someone who can help a new librarian or a library science student negotiate a path among the numerous meetings, programs, exhibits and acronyms. Mentees, or proteges (those being mentored) may be library science students, new librarians, first-time conference attendees, or anyone who would like to feel more comfortable attending the annual conference. The only qualification for being a mentor is to have a sincere interest in helping someone get the most out of the conference. This involves being a good listener, a thoughtful advisor and a role model. Mentors should expect to meet a least once with their mentees during the conference to answer questions, give guidance or just to listen. More contact during the conference, or, even afterwards is encouraged. Mentors can be from any ALA division or affiliate group in order to show mentees the many opportunities for involvement in ALA. In order to participate, just complete the form and mail it to: DORA HO NORTH HOLLYWOOD REGIONAL BRANCH LIBRARY 5211 TUJUNGA AVE. The program will match experienced conference attendees with students or individuals new to the profession to help them benefit from their first conference experience. Or, I suppose I should say that *I* wouldn't reduce my rate. I can't visualize the actual book from your description. It is possible that this book may need 2 indexes- one for the recipes, and one for the discussion of nutrition- especially if the nutritional information is extensive and complex. In that case, I would either quote my usual rate, or a bit higher if I had to do 2 indexes covering the same pages. No matter how much space you have for the index, you still have to do the intellectual work for an "ideal" index before it can be cut to size. At least I have to do it that way. Although the documentation is poor, at best, the person who I am subcontracting to is much more familiar with the idiosyncrasies of Word. She told me the proper switches to put in the field codes at the beginning of the index so that the chapter prefixes would appear. (Apparently she still has the MS manual from Word V2 and V3, which explain this stuff.) For example, Index {seq chapter \h \r9 \* Alphabetic} {Index \h " A " \c "2" \s chapter} the \c "2" formats the index into 2 columns; the \s chapter includes the chapter prefix in the page numbers, so that you get an index like this: A access privileges, 7-3 Account Enabled flag, 7-2 Actual & Plan graph, 4-8, 4-10 Actuals/Proposed Plan field, 3-12, 3-14 3-16, 3-21 Ad Hoc aggregates, 3-3, 4-1, 5-1, A-1 creating, 3-23 adding User IDs, 7-3 Adjusted Proposed Plan field, 3-15, 3-19 Admin user, C-1 aggregates, 3-2 3-3, G-1 etc. It *certainly* isn't as easy to work with as CINDEX, but I'm finding that embedded indexes are in very high demand for computer-related manuals. (In fact, I followed the advice of others on this list, and wrote the index with CINDEX first, and then embedded the entries in the MS Word files.) Thanks again for the help. In addition to her editorial role, Bonny has been a freelance indexer for some 15 years, specializing in scholarly books for university presses but also indexing such diverse materials as genealogy periodicals and a CD-ROM nursing database. 12:00 Lunch and roundtable discussions 1:30 Using the Internet and the World Wide Web as resources for indexing. Lynn Moncrief and Janet Perlman. Lynn Moncrief is the founder of TECHindex & Docs, specializing in technical and scientific indexing. In earlier incarnations, she was a US Navy electronics technician, then a technical writer. As an indexer, her favorite topics include computers (software, networks, programming, and online communications), electronics, physics, naval platforms and weapons systems, and cytobiology. She also does Windows (as in embedding indexes in FrameMaker and MS Word). Her clients include software companies and major and small publishers. For ASI she chairs the ASI Web Executive Committee and serves as secretary of the Southern California Chapter. Despite having been called a "gearhead" by a former physics professor, she does venture into right-brained activities when not indexing, such as surfing the Web, drawing in charcoals, and playing keyboard and drums. Janet Perlman of Southwest Indexing counts among her clients authors, publishers, book packagers, and professional organizations. Janet's specialty is the sciences physics, biology, engineering, and medicine but she always welcomes and enjoys indexing social sciences books as a change of pace. In her travels from part-timer to full-time indexer, Janet credits her participation in an online service as instrumental to her success. 2:30 Another coffee break and more networking time 3:15 Marketing your indexing services. Anne Leach began her indexing business in 1985 as a favor to a friend who needed an index. Within a few months, she had gained enough clients to work full-time at indexing . She's been a full-time freelancer ever since. As a result of her continued involvement in ASI, where a new indexer's first question is "How can I find clients?," she has maintained an interest in the techniques of marketing indexing services, editing the ASI publication Marketing Your Indexing Services. Anne was also active on ASI's Public Relations Committee for three years. She notes, "Even experienced indexers may want a change of scene and to expand into new specialties, and will ask the perennial question: `How can I find clients?'" ********************************** ========================================================================= Date: Fri, 5 Jan 1996 16:31:17 ECT Reply-To: Indexer's Discussion Group Sender: Indexer's Discussion Group From: Nan Badgett <76400.3351@compuserve.com> Subject: Re: Cookbook indexes ----------------------------Original message---------------------------- Janet and Niva said it well, but I'll add my 2 cents worth. I would not charge any less for a cookbook that also contains info on nutrition. In fact, you may find that the nutrition text requires more thoughtful indexing than the recipes themselves. Fewer entries does not necessarily mean less time to index. Nan Badgett Word-a-bil-i-ty
