At that time, someone said something about what to do if there were short chapters in a book with endnotes, where there might be 2-3 notes of the same number on the same subject on the same page but from different chapters, making the notes being exactly the same if this format is used: King, Martin Luther, Jr. "I Have a Dream Speech" of, 334 n. 1 I cannot find the message where this was discussed on INDEX-L, so can someone enlighten me on this topic? BTW, this situation seems to be rare, but it does happen. Would you do what CMS suggests for notes in general (p. 713, section 17.28), putting the text page number after the note in parens--this would identify these cases as being different. Of course a headnote would be order. Any other suggestions on how to handle this? Thanks. ***************************************** Cynthia D. Are end notes with the same number distinguished within the end notes themselves? Then use that disctinction in the index - e.g., if by chapter number then "I Have a Dream Speech" of, 334 ch. 2 n. 1 and perhaps with a headnote that chapter numbers are omitted when there is only one end note of that number on that page. And I suppose that in some cases it would help the reader to use both a chapter number and a text page number, since they point to different things. I am without a suggestion if the end notes are not distinguished by chapter, or if the chapters are just named, without numbers! In the course materials, I came across a post by Kevin Mulrooney in 1995 that says someone "produced a detailed document explaining" just what I am looking for. Could you direct me to this document? Has it recently been updated? The fee above is approximately $25/hr. For an employee working 2000 hrs/yr, this might be $50,000. For a freelancer this comes to approximately $25,000/yr. Why? Because freelancers must pay for their own health & disablity ins., pension matching, vacations, holidays, prof. training, child care credits, office expenses & equipment, time spent without work, looking for work, cleaning the office, etc. No offense intended to the manager. I don't whether librarians in her area earn $25K or $50, and I found her posting most helpful in other ways. I just wanted to clarify the difference between an employee hour and a freelance (home-based business) hour. Most managers and many freelancers do not realize how great the difference is. I've been away for a few months and am glad to be back on the list. I have the opportunity to put in a bid for a job that will be "indexing" a manual. Someone else will underline names in the text that should be indexed, and the job is essentially inputting the names, then sorting to eliminate dups, aggregating page ranges, and providing camera-ready copy. I don't really consider this indexing, I consider it word processing, since there is no intellectual or analytical ability needed to do this. Since I need work for my portfolio, I'm thinking of bidding---my question: Should I charge indexing rates or word processing rates or what? I hate to think that this job is what people think indexers do! Should I take it as an opportunity to enlighten the uninformed about indexing? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks mucho!
