Can anyone provide me with some guidance? Literature, URLs, etc. Craig, Check with your client to see how they'll format the CD-ROM text. If they're using Acrobat Reader, the text should look just like the layout pages -- pagination and everything -- and you can create a conventional index. (An online "help file" type of index would be more useful, of course, but requires special skills and software.) If your client is using HTML, then the book will no longer have a folio and you'll need to create a hyperlinked index. I think there are a couple of software packages on the market that can convert embedded index codes into HTML index links (anyone have info on these???). The only catch is that the embedded entries have to be extremely "clean" and ready for print... you can't edit the final HTML index without going back through the text and editing each individual code. At least this has been my experience... I'm looking forward to hearing what everyone else has to say. I've had to deal with a number of books that have been published to CD-ROM, and I'm still looking for the most efficient way to index these. Thanks to the wonderful support and many concrete ideas I received from Index-L, I was able to get the help I needed without having to resort to surgery. Two things that helped immediately were an elevated foot rest and ditching mouse. I've been using a Cirque Wave Keyboard 2 with Glidepoint for about 9 months and never want to return to a mouse. In addition to neck and back pain, I lost tactile sensation in part of my right hand. The Glidepoint allowed me to use any finger of either hand to do all the things I used to use a mouse for. My general practitioner was excellent about initial diagnosis and referral to a neurosurgeon and to a massage therapist. Thanks to an integrated approach I am mostly pain free with only a minimal disability in my right hand. I continue to see the therapist approximately once a month for strengthing and stretching exercises. Throughout this ordeal, which at once time involved my completely inability to use my right arm and hand, I have been in control of my treatment and how I wanted to approach it. There is a great deal of information out there on the web regarding RSI, particularly carpal tunnel and disk injuries. Oh, and BTW, suggest that your friend begin taking vitamin B6. This was recommended to me by a neurosurgeon friend and by my own physician. Miniature backpacks made a brief appearance as handbags/purses (depending on your country of origin) here in the States a year or two ago. "Terrific!" I thought. "No more lugging around a heavy purse on one shoulder." Sadly, the trend seems to be disappearing, if it hasn't gone altogether. We are back to either a big bag which you hang from one shoulder, or a little hand-held fifties-retro bag that scarcely holds your money and credit cards, let alone lipstick, keys, sunglasses, reading glasses, tissues, medications, your child's latest McDonald's Happy Meal toy, several pens, a calculator... you get the picture. I should have stocked up on those little backpacks when they were available! The "wheelies" Drusilla mentioned are indeed helpful for long-distance carting of heavy stuff, but a bit much for the normal purse-clutter. I used a wheelable salesman's catalog case when I was teaching; I found it saved an awful lot of strain. One still has to lift them in and out of the car and up and down steps, of course, and usually the wheels are too small to be much good on anything but a smooth surface (gravel driveways are impossible.) Still, I highly recommend "wheelie" containers for travel or, if you have back trouble, for carting around business gear such as a laptop, page proofs, etc. I think it is also possible to get full-size backpacks/bookpacks in leather, which would be slightly less casual than the usual fabric student backpack. It sounds > great. I would be interested in receiving any handouts or papers. Is this > possible? Thelda (and others not attending the conference): This sounds like a job for the ASI Web page! :-) Actually, there a lot of possibilities when it comes to reporting on the conference, and I think those indexers who are attending can all help out. __On the Local Chapter Level__ Local chapters can provide conference information to chapter members not attending. For example, I know that the Great Lakes Chapter has asked members attending the Seattle conference to write short reports about the events that they attend. These reports (which could run anywhere from two sentences to two pages) will be collated by those in charge of the chapters newsletter, to be distributed to all chapter members. (Note: I am not a member of the Great Lakes Chapter, so I apologize if I got some of the details wrong.) I suggest that if you are a local chapter head, consider rounding up those chapter members who are attending to either write reports for a newsletter or make verbal reports at your next meeting. If you are a chapter member who is not part of your chapter's leadership, contact your leadership as a volunteer. It's a great way to get involved, network, and gain experience. __On the National ASI Level__ The KeyWords newsletter for ASI often provides some report-like information about the conference. I am not part of the newsletter staff, so I can't speak for them, but for those who aren't attending, you may find KeyWords to be a valuable source of information on the conference nevertheless. __On the Personal Level__ If there is a talk that you are interested in specifically, it is not unreasonable to contact the speaker. Please don't get out of hand with this suggestion, though. Speakers are volunteers at these events (I am a speaker myself), and for the most part may not want to take time out of their schedules to photocopy more handouts or overheads and mail them to others. However, many people at ASI are certainly friendly and approachable. If you are willing to accept the possibility that your request will be politely declined (or perhaps even ignored), then a quick email message to the speaker is not unreasonable... as long as you are polite about it. :-) __On the Global Level__ The ASI Web page (of which I am a webmaster) has been posting up-to-date information about the conference. When the conference is finished, any information that is provided to the Web Committee regarding the conference will be added to the Web site. Be sure to stay tuned to the Web site even after the conference for information, reports, and summaries. If you are attending (or even speaking at) the conference, please contact the Webmasters with your reports. It's a great way to keep your fellow indexers informed, as well as to "strut your stuff" in a global forum. You can contact the Webmasters by following the appropriate links at the site (which, by the way, is at http://www.well.com/user/asi ). We would love to see your reports and opinions, and the Web committee will do its best to present accurate and unbiased information to all Web site visitors. __The Bottom Line__ If you attending, volunteer to write an abstract or report of the presentations and roundtables -- and even the dinners -- that you attend. Get in touch with your chapter representatives (don't know how? See http://www.well.com/user/asi/chapters.htm ) and arrange to have Seattle-based chapter meetings while you're there, or to exchange information after the conference is over back in your home area. You may even want to volunteer to write for an indexing journal such as ASI's KeyWords, or the STC's Indexing SIG newsletter. (To do so, contact the journal's editors; they reserve the right to accept those article ideas they feel are appropriate.) If you are not attending, there are options available to you! So don't despair. In fact, even those who are attending the conference will not be able to attend ever single event; these reports are useful for everyone. Take it upon yourselves, then, to start report sessions in your area. - Seth -- Seth A. If you want to find out more about SKY Pro, come to the dinner and/or meeting on Wednesday May 13th in Seattle. My intent right now for the roundtable is to focus on what is different about indexing computer books: such as indexing symbols, indexing dialog boxes and sereens - when to put them in and when not to, dealing with command strings and code, the compressed schedules for computer books and the delays due to software problems (the software being written about), formatting needs of publishers, the audience for computer books - who is the audience for a particular book, the likelihood of future editions, and, if there is any time left, working through the indexing process marking and editing, the impact of software, and the need for written procedures (in a one person office? Probably so if your memory is as short as mine.) And war stories. But those will probably be best left to midnight discussions in the lobby or close by.
