When I mentioned that perhaps the author could call me, as a way to control his chattiness (assumption: if it is on his phone bill, he'll watch the clock a bit), the editor agreed to send me a phone card to use for talking to this author. He said that I could just keep the card paid up and the press would reimburse me the expense. I like this as a way to control long-distance phone charges, and I thought I would mention it. I wouldn't have thought of it, but it seems like a good compromise in a case like this, where we can already anticipate high phone charges. The press can cover them, but without the hassle of my photocopying phone bills and submitting receipts. I already use a phone card when traveling, because even if I am calling from a pay phone, I find that the cost of checking my messages is less than billing it back to my own phone number, especially from a hotel room. I like to use it when I visit friends as well, to avoid jacking up their phone bills inadvertently. (Wouldn't Miss Manners just love me?) All in all, the phone card is one "invention" of the modern phone system that I can live with. Just thought I'd mention this, as other might find it useful; for all I know, everyone is already doing it and I have been out to lunch somewhere! Barbara E. I was impressed by the extraordinary publicity work done by the volunteer committee. Thanks for enlightening me. It is my belief that much of what you write about "fixing ASI" is the result of growing pains. Consider that in the past 6 or 7 years alone: ASI membership has tripled, annual meeting duration has expanded from one day to four (with more than doubled attendance), the mimeographed newsletter has blossomed into a journal-like publication with technical articles as well as news, the number of chapters has significantly increased, and SIGs have been established. All of this demands much more time from board & committee members than formerly. Although this growth is quite a tribute to ASI's previous directors and active members, small wonder that the organization is having trouble coping on all fronts. Yes, some real hard long-range planning and very likely some other ways of allocating responsibilities is needed. I've heard that being vice-president and the president is nearly a full-time job in itself. Yet, past presidents have managed to keep indexing as well. My hat is off to them. Cindex has a medical dictionary as an add-on to its spell checking facilities. It is OK for finding silly mistakes on basic medical terms. I have recently bought an electronic medical dictionary to replace my hefty-tome version, but rather regret it as the software one has to install and run the CD-Rom is slow, and takes up an unbelievable amount of hard disk space and computer memory. I don't think I would recommend it. Instructions were to type responses and to use the exercise sheets provided. The book containing the exercises is perfect bound, however, and there are no perforations. My question is whether it would be acceptable to type the answers on a separate sheet and submit them that way or must they be on the actual sheets provided? As a former teacher, I realize that we often preferred to have uniform test sheets for use with our corresponding answer sheets. For lessons whose questions appeared on an answer sheet, I ripped the sheets out and trimmed them off with scissors. In other cases, I used regular paper and retyped the questions along with the answers. You can hand write the answers to many of the shorter exercises and questions (if your penmanship is better than mine!), but the indexes should be typed. And be sure to make copies of the lessons before mailing them off. You can obtain your instructor's e-mail by calling the USDA. I believe my instructor included hers with the first returned lesson. Be prepared for a slow turn around. Most of my lessons took 3-5 weeks to be reviewed and mailed back. Good luck with the course. Well, Julius has retired from his position as Library Director and no longer has command over the server. The archives will no doubt have to be moved. Is there anyone out there who would like to provide a home for the archives? Since gopher technology has passed its prime, it would be nifty if someone could provide a web-based solution to archives access. The disc space at Binghamton provides for about three months worth of archives, more or less, depending upon the volume of message traffic. The archives date from Aug, 1992. Please contact me if you are interested in taking this on. If you're lucky, your library will have an edition more recent than the 1996 copy my library has. Look in the subject index under history and whatever looks like it could involve plants (science, agriculture, etc.). Then look up the publishers listed under those subjects. Write down names, addresses, subjects published, and phone numbers. Go home and start calling! Ask to speak to whoever hires freelance indexers, then introduce yourself to that person and give your marketing spiel (that's up to you!). I always offer to send references and sample indexes with my resume (when I didn't have professional experience yet, I sent practice ("unpublished") indexes). This is how I got my first job (fresh from the USDA course). Good Luck! If your reference is to the entire footnote, then another way of posting might be: Brimmer, Fred 45-46n.1. Once I used an "n.1" indication on a reference for a page on which the "n.1" indication actually appeared on the previous page. In this case, I was indexing only the portion of the footnote which appeared on the page indicated. This produced a discussion on Index-L at the time since footnotes aren't covered particularly well in books on indexing. Hope this helps. Your index locator is directing the reader to the location of the information in the footnote, so it needs to send them where the footnote is. Do Mi >>
